Escape Room FAQ

What is an escape room?

An escape room is a themed room inside a building that has been decked out with puzzles, gadgets, and decor that goes along with the theme.

How many people do you need to do an escape room?

At least 2 and no more than 12. However, most venues will tell you how many people each escape room is designed for. Some rooms require more people because multiple buttons may need to be pressed simultaneously or there are a lot more puzzles to solve.

How much does an escape room cost?

It varies, but the prices we’ve seen range between $20 per person up to $35 per person. For a family of 4 to reserve an escape room usually costs between $80-$140.

Do you get locked in?

No, you won’t actually be locked in. You’re free to leave, use the restroom, and return to the game at any time during your scheduled booking.

What happens in an escape room?

Before you enter the room, the gamemaster will explain how the room works and anything you need to know. Next, your gamemaster gets in costume (usually as the villain) and explains the story line. Next, you’re set free to go inside the room and look for clues. Work together to gather clues, and use them to solve puzzles and open up more of the room to get closer to “winning” the room. To “escape” or win, you usually need to solve a series of puzzles and complete a certain series of tasks in a specific sequence before time runs out.

Can you get hints?

Yes, you can ask for hints at any time during the game. Your game master will be watching your group via camera and you’ll hear their voice (in character) as you look for clues. Your game master may also nudge you in certain directions if they see you struggling.

How long does an escape room take?

All the escape rooms we have experienced are always set for a 60 minute time limit.

What is a private booking?

A private booking means that only your family will be in the room. If you sign up individually, some venues may group you together with other people that are not in your party. However, most venues seem to be getting away from this and usually have the option for private bookings.

What is a game master?

A game master is the person who sets up your escape room, gives you the rules, and helps you complete the room by giving hints when needed and nudging you in the right direction. They do not stay in the room with you but watch via camera and usually you can hear them over a speaker in your room giving clues as needed.

How do I find clues?

Just look around, look for things that are out of place, read everything you see, touch and wiggle things, look behind pictures. Be curious! If you find multiples of something, usually they fit together in some sort of puzzle. If you find something, be sure to tell others in your group in case they found something, too!
